Homeless person dies in fire inside tent at Sudbury encampment

Share

A homeless man died last month in Sudbury after lighting a fire inside his tent at an encampment not far from downtown.

With temperatures getting colder, Greater Sudbury Fire Services is taking steps to educate people living in encampments about how to safely stay warm.

Information pamphlets are being passed out by fire services, bylaw and outreach workers.

Deputy chief Jesse Oshell said it includes the risks associated with smoking, burning candles, using portable fuel heaters and the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“They are using fuel-fired heating sources such as buddy heaters many are familiar with that used for ice fishing run on propane,” Oshell said.

“And those things all can be done but they need to be done safely and there are ways to do that.”

This week, the city said it’s aware of 114 people living outside across 30 locations.
