Highway 17 west of Sudbury reopened after transport crash, roll over
A single transport crash early Thursday morning on Highway 17 west of Sudbury brought traffic to a stop for several hours, reopening shortly before 10:30 a.m.
Shortly before 5:30 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Greater Sudbury Fire Service and Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Sleepy Hollow Road, said police in a news release Thursday afternoon.
The Greater Sudbury area had woken up to a light dusting of snow on the ground Thursday, and several social media comments indicate that area of the road was slippery.
“A CMV (commercial motor vehicle) had jackknife (sic) and then rolled over into the ditch blocking both lanes,” said police.
“The driver had to be extracted from the vehicle and was assessed by emergency medical services.”
No injuries were reported, OPP Const. Rob Lewis told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in a phone interview Thursday morning.
It will take some time to clean up and clear the road, Lewis had said.
While some backroads were available to passenger vehicles through Worthington, commercial vehicles were stuck on the highway due to load restrictions on the side roads.
“The highway was closed in both directions for just over four hours, during the investigation and the removal of the vehicle,” said police.
Police did not release any details on the cause of the crash or if any charges are pending.
