Henvey Inlet suspect charged with assaulting peace officer with weapon

Ontario Provincial Police have laid charges against a local man after a 'shelter-in-place' on Monday on Henvey Inlet First Nation, a small community about 76 kilometres south of Sudbury on Highway 69.

Michael Ashawasega, 27, is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, assault, having a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a probation order following a disturbance that started around 5 p.m. Sunday, OPP said in a news release.

Members of numerous provincial police units responded to the incident including the OPP helicopter, tactical and rescue unit, canine unit and emergency response team.

A public safety advisory was issued around 11 a.m. Monday with police calling Ashawasega "armed and dangerous." It ended just before 1:30 p.m. with his arrest.

No details have been released about the initial disturbance.

The accused is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Parry Sound Jan. 13.

None of the charges has been proven in court.
