Environment Canada issued a heavy snowfall warning Monday for Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas.

“Lake effect snow squalls are developing near Lake Superior this morning,” the weather forecaster said.

“Local snowfall accumulations could reach 15 to 25 cm by Tuesday. Strong northwesterly winds will accompany these snow squalls resulting in significantly reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

The warning includes the Sault, Searchmont, Montreal River Harbour, Batchawana Bay, St. Joseph Island, Agawa and Lake Superior Park.

Snowfall is expected Monday morning into Tuesday morning.

“Travel is expected to be significantly impacted, and people are encouraged to monitor future forecasts for further details,” the warning said.

“Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

A winter weather advisory is also in effect for Manitoulin Island, Blind River, Elliot Lake, Ranger Lake and Thessalon.
