SUDBURY -- Timmins police are on Rae Street South this morning.

Sources tell CTV News they noticed the heavy police presence around 7 a.m. with members of the Emergency Response Team also on scene.

The section of Rae Street South between Bannerman Avenue and Commercial Avenue remains blocked at this time.

In an Oct. 31 news release, the Timmins Police Service (TPS) confirmed they cornered off the intersection due to an incident involving a firearm earlier that morning.

The incident will remain under investigation by the TPS Criminal Investigation Division.

“The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in regards to this event,” said police in the release.

According to its website, the SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency which investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Timmins police at (705) 264-1201 or to call Crime Stoppers at 1(800)222-8477 should they wish to remain anonymous.
