A newly-elected councillor in Hearst had to give up his seat after he refused to follow provincial law and swear allegiance to the Queen.

Gaetan Baillargeon asked that the wording be changed at the swearing in to accommodate his First Nations views and his opinions on the Crown.

His seat is now vacant.

Mayor Roger Sigouin is awaiting direction from the province on what to do.

He says he should know more by the time council meets on December 18th.
