TIMMINS -- Three schools in Timmins joined thousands of students across Canada in computer science charity Hackergal’s 5th annual "Hackathon."

At École Catholique Sacré-Coeur Timmins, 32 girls from grades six to eight sit in a computer lab with the task of creating in interactive project using their weeks of training in computer coding.

It’s the school’s first-time hacking away in the Hackathon, making it one of three schools in Timmins and the only schools in northeastern Ontario participating.

For teacher Lucie Mclean, who has been coaching her students every week since September along with a tech specialist, it’s the opportunity to expose girls to the possibilities computer science and make their mark in a typically male-dominated field.
