Group in Greater Sudbury looking to attract more pollinators to the region
Linda Hachez and her fellow gardeners in the community of Coniston are trying to attract more butterflies and bees to their David Suzuki Pollinator Garden.
"Right now, the garden looks kind of sparse because of a shortage of pollinator plants that are good for our region," said Linda Hachez. "There are a lot of different plants but they are not native to our region."
One of those plants is goldenrod -- a plant in which Hachez said she’s not a fan of.
"They look different, there’s no two ways about it," she said. "When they fill in, they get a classic beauty of their own."
She is a master gardener and has a lot of garden beds at her home, but admitted this is the first time she’s planted a pollinator garden.
"I’m doing it for all the right reasons -- not because I like the look of the flower," said Hachez.
She said the pollinator garden isn’t just set up to attract butterflies and bees, but also birds.
