SUDBURY -- After moving to one bag a week in October 2019, Greater Sudbury is preparing for more changes to its garbage collection policies.

Beginning in February, garbage will be collected every second week, but residents will be able to put two bags at the curb.

The city is mailing a notice to nearly 13,000 households detailing the change to their waste collection day of the week, which take effect in February.

"The notice will indicate your current collection day of the week and the day it will change to beginning in February," the city said in a news release Friday.

"All residents can confirm their new pickup schedule online by visiting greatersudbury.ca/wastewise, downloading the Greater Sudbury Waste Wise app in the App Store or on Google play, or calling 311."

The change is part of a long-term strategy by Greater Sudbury to extend the life of city landfills by diverting more waste to the blue box and composting programs. There are no limits to the amount of recycling and compost that can be put out at the curb, and collection of those items will remain weekly.

Residents can also continue to make unlimited requests for large furniture, appliance and electronics pickup, the city said.
