SAULT STE. MARIE -- The Downtown Association in Sault Ste. Marie is giving out free flowers all week to unsuspecting people.

In an effort to brighten up someone’s day, the Downtown Association has teamed up with two local businesses, Mann Florist and Tamar’s Trends Flower Shop, to hand out free carnations all week during the lunch hour.

Ashlyn McMillan is the interim manager for the Downtown Association and says this event was created as a way to do something special during February.

"We were talking about a queen of hearts event, how we don’t usually do anything for Valentine’s Day and we don’t really know how to target downtown with that. So, we looked at other cities and they usually hand out things like this and it’s a nice way to brighten people’s day,” said McMillan.

200 flowers will be handed out during the week and McMillan says the response has been fantastic. "I’ve gotten some really cute stories about how people have missed their husbands or maybe not seeing their families this season and they have just really enjoyed the gesture," said McMillan.
