Four charged with drug, weapons and other offences after traffic stop in Espanola, Ont.

An Ontario Provincial Police officer noticed a strong smell of cannabis during a traffic stop Sunday in Espanola. Further investigation uncovered drugs and weapons.

The incident took place around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 6, Manitoulin OPP said in a news release Monday. Three people from southern Ontario and one northerner have been charged.

Police stopped the vehicle for a Highway Traffic Act violation and smelled pot coming from inside. So officers searched the four occupants and the vehicle.

“During the search police located a loaded handgun, approximately $7,000 in Canadian currency, approximately 195 grams of suspected cocaine and suspected hydromorphone and oxycodone pills with an estimated street value of $29,000,” police said.

“All occupants of the vehicle were subsequently arrested.”

Charged are a 22-year-old from Thornhill, a 21-year-old from M'Chigeeng First Nation, a 22-year-old from Toronto and a 23-year-old from London.

All have been charged with weapons-related offences, possession of the proceeds of crime and drug trafficking offences. They have also been charged with violating release conditions.

The 22-year-old from Toronto was also charged with driving with cannabis readily available and driving without a valid permit. The 23-year-old from London was also charged with having more than one driver’s licence.

All four suspects were held in custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury Bail Court.
