SUDBURY -- The flood watch for the Mattagami River in Timmins has been upgraded to a warning after water levels continued to rise over the weekend.

A combination of warm weather, snow melt and rain has the Timmins Flood Advisory Committee warning residents about imminent flooding. The river is on a floodplain and often floods in the spring.

Officials say the extent of the flooding is hard to predict, but that anyone living near the river is advised to monitor the developing conditions. Residents should prepare a household plan in the event a flood emergency is declared.

Children should be told about the dangers of playing near local lakes, rivers and streams, the committee said.

Any material and equipment near the shorelines should be secured at least until May 8, which is how long the warning is in effect.
