Five people have been injured in a multi-vehicle collision that closed a stretch of road near Highway 17 in Sault Ste. Marie for several hours.

The Sault Police Service said three vehicles were involved in the crash and one person suffered life-threatening injuries. Police officials said it happened around noon.

"When we arrived we found that there were actually three vehicles involved, and as a result of the collision five people had to be transported to the hospital and we know right now that at least one of them was transported with life threatening injuries," explained Constable Sonny Spina.

The stretch of road has been re-opened.
