SUDBURY -- The Timiskaming Health Unit announced five new positive cases of COVID-19 on Friday, one in the northern part and four in the southern part of the District of Timiskaming.

The new cases are separate from an outbreak at a long-term care home announced earlier in the day.

"One is the contact of a confirmed case outside our district and the other four are contacts of confirmed cases," the health unit said in a news releases. "The cases are not linked to the Teck Pioneer outbreak. The individuals are self-isolating. Contact tracing is underway and those who have been identified as close contacts have been, or are in the process of being notified."

With the recent increase in cases, the province announced Friday the health unit is moving to the yellow/prevent designation under the province's framework for rating the severity of the pandemic in health units across the province.
