SAULT STE. MARIE -- On Manitoulin Island, many First Nations and municipalities are on different pages during the COVID-19 pandemic -- and it's causing a divide across the island.
On April 25, a travel ban was set up. Checkpoints were put up on Highway 540 and Highway 551, where they run through M'chigeeng First Nation.
The move forced a local mayor to call on the province to step in.
This week, an Island First Nation organization proposed a new COVID-19 response committee that would include input from "all voices," without the province having to get involved.
The committee would be made up of eight people -- four indigenous and four non-indigenous -- and would have a rotating chairperson.
It would also include representatives from police and public health officials to help get the entire island working together during the pandemic.
