Police in Sault Ste. Marie say the sound of fireworks prompted several calls to 911 on Thursday afternoon.

Reports of suspected gunfire came in around 1 p.m. Sept. 11, Sault police said in a news release Wednesday.

In response, patrol officers, the canine unit, and members of the emergency investigative services units descended on the area between Cooper Street and Goulais Avenue.

"The investigation revealed someone had set off firecrackers," police said.

"No firearm was located, and no evidence of gunfire was discovered."

Officers gave a verbal warning about setting off firecrackers to people found in the area.

The scene has been cleared.
