SUDBURY -- A Timmins area man in his 70s who was exposed through institutional outbreak, has died from complications related to COVID-19.

The Porcupine Health Unit reported the death in a news release issued Thursday evening, but did not confirm through which institution the man was exposed to the virus.

"It is with extreme sadness that I have the duty to report another COVID related death in the Porcupine Health Unit region.” said Dr. Lianne Catton, PHU Medical Officer of Health, in the release. "This tragic loss highlights the seriousness of what is happening in our communities."

This is the fifth death from COVID-19 reported by the Porcupine Health Unit.

Four long-term care homes in the Porcupine District have declared an outbreak including Extendicare Timmins, Golden Manor, Spruce Hill Lodge and St. Mary’s Manor.

The man was admitted to the Timmins and District Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 on April 26.

"We want to extend our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of this gentleman," stated Blaise MacNeil, President and Chief Executive Officer at the Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) said in the release. "The impact of any loss is felt greatly throughout our community and our thoughts remain with those affected."

The TADH's investigation is on-going and the hospital will continue to work in conjunction with the Porcupine Health Unit.
