Military families at 22 Wing Canadian Forces Base North Bay are getting some new money from Ottawa.

It's North Bay's share of $6-million in federal funding from the Department of National Defence for a number of programs at the Military Family Resource Centre.

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs is hoping its new funding initiative will make it easier for those concluding their service to the military.

Tessa Clermont is the Executive Director of the Military Family Resource Centre in North Bay.

"Veterans Affairs was doing some research and found out that the medical release for members and their families is the hardest part of transitioning out of the military so they thought you know what we will go to the experts and go to the military family services." said Clermont.

Anthony Rota is the Liberal MP for Nipissing-Temiskaming.

"The pilot project started right here in North Bay and I’m very proud of the group here in North Bay who put it forward and secured a little bit of funding up-front, but now this funding is being rolled out right across the country." said Rota.

22 Wing North Bay's share of the funding will be a little over $140,000 for the next two years.

Various programs will benefit from the new money.

"We are able to increase the support for children and youth programs and community engagement, as well, making sure people know what the local civilian community has to offer and the support that is offered to them off-base." said Clermont.

Wing Commander, Colonel Mark Roberts, says during his service, his family has had to move on six occasions.

The father of three adds the MFRC plays an important role when it comes to the quality of life of military families.

"It's a level of comfort, both as a commander and rank-and-file, to know that, ok, my family is taken care of. There is resources there, funding there, that I can focus on the mission, so it means a great deal." said Colonel Roberts.

The centre says there is a $30,000 portion included in this announcement, funding which is expected to extend beyond the two year period and be granted annually.
