The newest Syrian family arrived in Sudbury this week to start a new life in a new country.

After years of trying, waiting, and wondering, they're finally in their new home.

"The future had opened its doors. It was amazing really," said newcomer Imad Janat.

The family of three's journey has taken them from Syria to Eqypt, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. Imad met his wife, Roaa Hamdoun, in dental school and five years ago, they welcomed Liala into their fold.

"It was not easy, all that moving, but we are finally, we have khallas. It's a step, khallas. So yeah, hopefully everything will be fine finally." said Hamdoun.

"First two days was for us to, you know, relax and to get over the jet lag. But they all take care about us: calling, asking us if we want anything, so yeah, I want to thank them all," said Janat.

They've already been busy working themselves into Canadian culture with their first trip to the grocery store and were struck with how nice everyone was.

"We are so excited to go and discover. The past couple of days, we've gone around and seen the city, it was amazing," said Hamdoun.

Little Liala was surprised to see the dozens of Sudburians who welcomed the family this week at the airport.

"There was a big party and I was like when I came in I didn't know what all of this was for," said Liala.

She said she was surprised it was all for her and her family.

The Islamic Association of Sudbury, the local Jewish community, and St. Andrews United Church raised funds to support this trio as they adjust to their new lives.

"We worked hard, but I always feel they are the ones that are going to work harder. Because we worked hard as a group, but for them, the adaptation, they're going to have to study, they're going to have to adjust for winter, that's not easy," said Maha Dabliz, of the Sudbury Islamic Association.

Dentists by trade, they've already begun work to get certified here in Canada in hopes of practicing their profession.

And as for those winters, they say they've been warned about the snow.

At least they have a few months to get ready for it.
