Many people in Sudbury's south-end are happy to hear that there will soon be better cell service in their area.

A new tower is going up and you might not even notice it’s there.

It looks just like a pine tree except for the fact that it’s very, very tall.

Greg Belyea is President of Excel Tower Service.

"It’s a 131-foot mono pine. It's a communication tower and it's designed to be aesthetically pleasing to the community." said Belyea.

Chris Ransom owns the property where the structure is being built.

He says when the telecommunications company originally approached him to install a regular cell tower, he said ‘no’ right away, but he changed his mind after a visit to the Muskokas.

"We had seen while we were on vacation a tree, what my wife describes as a pine tree on steroids. They're technically called a mono-pine.” said Ransom.

So what do locals think of it?

"People very close weren't that keen on it, but a lot of the other people were very excited that they were going to get great cell phone service. They were appreciative of the fact that I decided not to go with the traditional-looking tower." said Ransom.

Disguising a cellphone tower is nothing new for the United States, and there are several of the tree look-alikes in southern Ontario.

"They build cactuses down south to blend in, palm trees in Florida. They have street lights and flag poles. There's many different ways to hide a cellphone communication tower." said Belyea.

Don’t expect the mono-pine to become the norm anytime soon though; the camouflaged structures are substantially more expensive.

As for the Sudbury tower, he says it will be up and running within the next few weeks.
