SUDBURY -- Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for several communities in northeastern Ontario overnight Wednesday.

Windchill values close to -40C expected to last until Thursday morning for the following areas:

  • Fraserdale - Pledger Lake
  • Kapuskasing - Hearst - Smooth Rock Falls
  • Little Abitibi - Kesagami Lake
  • Timmins - Cochrane - Iroquois Falls
  • Geraldton - Longlac - Caramat
  • Manitouwadge - Hornepayne
  • Nakina - Aroland – Pagwa

Make sure to bundle up when going outside as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.

Officials say frostbite can result in amputation, so get medical help.

Do not rub or massage the area or warm it until you can ensure it will stay warm gradually with body heat or warm water.

Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
