It’s bear season again and people in Sudbury were given some advice about how to avoid confrontations.

Mike McIntosh is a bear expert and founder of Bear With Us; a sanctuary and rehabilitation centre.

During his presentation on Thusday night, McIntosh spoke with northerners about what attracts bears, what do to when encountering one and who to call for help with bears. He said properly handling garbage is a key.

“They don't eat garbage, they eat the food in the garbage,” said McIntosh. “If you think there's bears in the neighbourhood make sure you don't put the food in the garbage out a long time before the garbage pickup. If the garbage pickup isn't for a while and if you have an old freezer, freeze it and the next time pick up comes, or you go to the landfill, you can take it then.”
