Update:

The Elliot Lake civic centre will remain closed for the foreseeable future until the city’s Chief Building Official and engineers can assess the damage.

City officials from Elliot Lake say that programs and events in the Centennial Arena, municipal pool, and Collins Hall have been temporarily cancelled until crews can remove snow from each of facility’s roofs.

They say it is being done as a precaution to safeguard public safety.

There has been another roof collapse in the community of Elliot Lake.

After almost seven years since the tragic Algo Centre Mall collapse in 2012, the town, about two hours west of Sudbury, has seen another roof collapse.

Published reports say it happened around 6:30 pm Thursday, February 21 at the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre due to a buildup of heavy snow.

No injuries have been reported, but there were people inside of the building at the time.

The facility houses several local organizations, including a community theatre and museum.

People are being asked to stay away from the building that is now closed.

This comes after two other roofs in the region caved in this week, one at the hockey arena in Timiskaming First Nation and the other at a home in Whitefish.

CTV Northern Ontario's Molly Frommer is following this story and will have more details.
