An Elliot Lake woman has been charged with mischief following an incident on the morning of Feb. 7.

On that day, an Ontario Provincial Police patrol spotted a person known to them get in a white car on Bennett Drive and drive away.

“Police knew the driver had no licence and attempted to stop the car,” the OPP said in a news release Monday.

“The driver failed to stop, and instead sped off carelessly at a high rate of speed endangering other road users. The vehicle was later located, towed and impounded.”

The same day, the owner of the white vehicle called police around 3:30 p.m. and reported that her vehicle had been stolen sometime overnight.

“Police re-attended the residence and spoke to the complainant,” the release said.

“The owner denied having any contact with the person that police had witnessed walk out of house and calmly drive away earlier in the day. Nor was she aware that the car was already impounded.”

After investigating the complaint, police concluded she had concocted the stolen vehicle story in an attempt to cover for the suspended driver who fled police.

The 45-year-old woman was charged March 31 with public mischief and has a May 9 court date in the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake.
