A 52-year-old driver from Elliot Lake is facing several charges after Ontario Provincial Police pulled over a vehicle early Sunday morning.

At about 12:15 a.m., police were on general patrol on Chalmers Crescent when officers stopped a grey pickup truck in order to check the sobriety of the driver.

“Open cans of alcohol were observed inside the vehicle and three drug bongs were also later located,” police said in a news release Monday.

“In addition, approximately four grams of suspected psilocybin was in the driver's possession.”

The driver was arrested after they were tested by a drug recognition evaluator.

Charges include impaired driving, drug possession and driving with open liquor.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 9.

“The OPP has highly trained DRE officers who are skilled in the detection and investigation of drug-impaired drivers,” police said.

To report a suspected impaired driver, dial 911 or contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
