SUDBURY -- A 55-year-old from Blind River is facing charges for a sexual assault on someone under age 16 that took place 30 years ago, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police said Thursday.

The historic sexual assault was uncovered July 29, when police were called shortly after 7:30 p.m. about a disturbance in Blind River.

"It was reported that a person was intoxicated, yelling and using profanity," police said in a news release. "During the course of the investigation into the disturbance, it was disclosed to police that a sexual assault had occurred some 30 years ago."

The 55 year old is charged with sexual interference and sexual assault of someone under the age of 16.

In addition, the person is charged with criminal harassment and is accused of repeatedly following, repeatedly communicating with, watching and besetting, and threatening conduct, as well as causing a disturbance.

The OPP no longer reveals the gender of the people they charge.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 1.
