Despite snow struggles, cross-country ski races held in Walden

Many winter events and races have been cancelled this winter because of a lack of snow, but on Tuesday in Greater Sudbury, cross-country ski races for 300 elementary students were a go.

They hit the trails at the Walden Cross Country Ski Club, competing in races by grade ranging from 1.2 to 3 kilometres in length.

“My two words for winning: Go Fast! So at the start, I rocketed it and I went full speed,” said William Nicholls, the Grade 3/4 race winner.

Organizers said it’s all about a great day on the trails in the spirit of friendly competition and healthy, active living.

“It’s great to get the kids out skiing,” said Carol Mourre, a teacher and the race co-organizer.

“For some, it’s an introduction to the sport and not only for racing in cross-country skiing but cross-country skiing as a lifelong sport. It’s an activity you can do anytime with your family.”

Officials at the Walden Cross Country Ski Club said the trails are in prime condition right now and this weekend it will host the Ontario Cup with racers ranging from youth to masters competing from all over the province.
