Dean Sayers running for National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations

A familiar face is running for National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Former Batchewana Chief Dean Sayers officially launched his campaign at an event held along the banks of the St. Marys River. He said his decision to run is a natural progression of his political career.

"I think there was a natural expression that happened with the most recent election in Batchewana that allowed me to take a look at other opportunities to help improve the quality of life of Indigenous people, of Anishinabek, across the lands," said Sayers, adding he is focused on renewing the AFN's mandate of advocating for First Nations people and continuing to work toward reconciliation.

"We need to have real action from those concepts that are so freely thrown about by all these governments across Canada," he said.

"We will find our rightful place on these lands."

The Assembly of First Nations will select a new National Chief on Dec. 6.
