SUDBURY -- After being forced to close in winter 2019 because of structural problems with its roof, the Coniston Curling Club is back in business after a provincial grant funded repairs.
In a news release, the club said the $150,000 Ontario Trillium grant allowed the club to reopen, supporting curling in Coniston and physical activity of more than 150 members of the club.
“So many events in Coniston take place in the curling club, so when the problems with the roof were discovered, it brought real hardship to the whole community,” Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas said in the release.
'A big thank you'
"A big thank you to everyone who came together during this time. Community spirit is alive and well in Coniston."
With the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the club was able to repair the roof and get our curlers back on the ice. The club is used by a variety of groups in the community and has members of all ages participating in curling and physical activity.
“The impact of the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be underestimated,” Pamela Patry, president of Coniston Curling Club, said the release. “This grant has allowed us to make the repairs to the roof in order to continue the long history of curling in Coniston.”
The club is available for league play, ice rentals and hall rentals. More information can be found at the club's website.
Curling is allowed in 2020 with COVID 'Return to Play Guidelines' in place.
