SUDBURY -- Chocolate, vanilla, even ones with sprinkles. It’s National Cupcake Day and the Sudbury & District Animal Centre is celebrating.

On Monday, SPCA's and Humane Societies across Canada called on local organizations to bake and sell cupcakes to help raise much needed funds for creatures big and small.

In Sudbury, Northern Nissan, Laking Toyota and several schools took part in the event.

Officials say the money that is raised in Sudbury will stay here.

Jen Hughes, Animal Centre Manager at OSPCA Sudbury said "the ones that come in and need medical care… that’s where that funding is going to go. Towards medical care, towards housing, towards taking care of everything to keep them comfortable while they’re here short term before we move them onto their adoptive home."

The centre hopes to raise $7,000 this year and Hughes says she believes that goal will be exceeded.

In 2019, animal lovers across Canada raised over $380,000 in support of their favourite animal welfare organization.

The campaign has raised $3.5 million to date.
