SUDBURY -- North Bay's Nipissing University has closed its athletic centre for cleaning after an individual on campus tested positive for COVID-19.

"The individual resides off campus but was in the Robert J. Surtees Athletics Centre Nov. 13," said the university in a statement." The university is working with the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit to ensure the health and well-being of the individual and the community. The individual is self-isolating and all contact tracing is being managed by public health. Anyone who may have been in close contact with the individual will be contacted directly."

Officials said the person alerted the school right away after testing positive.

"Should our investigation and contact tracing identify an increased risk to members of the community beyond those identified as close contacts, the public will be notified," said North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit in a news release. "The individual is currently self-isolating."

As a result, the school is closing the athletic centre Wednesday for deep cleaning.

"Our staff are working with Nipissing University to provide important public health direction," said Dr. Jim Chirico, medical officer of health for the Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts. "We remind the public that we must continue to work together to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by following public health measures and limiting social activities and travel outside the district."

"Members of the Nipissing University community are also encouraged to download the Nipissing Safe app," said the school.
