SUDBURY -- Noront Steel (1981) Limited, a steel fabrication company in Copper Cliff, has been fined $70K in provincial offences court for an incident dating back to August 2018.

The Ministry of Labour says a worker was critically injured after a steel drum exploded at a work site.

Noront must also pay a 25 per cent victim surcharge.

The ministry investigation revealed a worker was cutting drainage holes in a drum with a torch when the barrel exploded. The barrel contained flammable substances at the time.

Noront Steel is located at 100 Noront Road in the Walden Industrial Park.
