SUDBURY -- Conservation Sudbury issued a flood watch Tuesday for the Wanapitei River downstream of Wanapitei Lake.
"Water levels and stream flows on watercourses are already high from the recent rain and will remain elevated for some time," Conservation Sudbury said in a news release. "Larger systems like the Vermilion and Wanapitei Rivers have levels and flows that are building."
In addition, water safety messaging is still in effect for all other watercourses in Greater Sudbury. Both statements are in effect until 11 a.m. on Nov. 2.
"Higher levels and faster flowing water is to be expected in all watercourses," the release said. "The inundation of low-lying areas, adjacent to watercourses with a history of flooding, is occurring."
All residents, and especially those living in known low-lying, hazard areas where overland flooding or ponding could become an issue, should be vigilant about the potential hazards.
"Public safety is absolutely the No. 1 priority, especially for children who may be attracted to the edge of creeks or rivers," the release said. "The cold, fast flowing water must be avoided. Stream banks will be very slippery and unsafe, and must be avoided."
Conservation Sudbury remains in contact with Greater Sudbury, Ontario Power Generation and all other partners to keep them informed of the situation.
"Staff continues with the monitoring of water levels and updates will be provided as required," the release said.
