Winter events in northern Ontario can be more than just a seasonal social gathering.
These events are often an expression of the community's history and a testament to the traditions its residents hold dear.
For the Town of Cochrane and the rich history of its Winter Carnival, the event is an opportunity for its residents to celebrate the spirit of winter.
Throughout the 11 day event, attendees greet one-another using the word "chimo" from the Inuktitut language of Northern Canada.
The word is believed to mean, "a special friend for people in need of someone to talk to,"and the value of this greeting has translated all the way to the name of the town mascot, Chimo the polar bear.
In 1934, the township launched the Cochrane Winter Carnival, and this weekend, residents celebrate its 60 year anniversary.
To mark this milestone, CTV Northern Ontario shares sights and sounds from the 2020 Torchlight Parade courtesy of the Cochrane Winter Carnival event team.
