TIMMINS -- For the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic, an entire school in the Porcupine Health Unit’s area is closed.

Health unit and French Catholic school board officials have decided to close temporarily Ecole Nouveau Regard in Cochrane, as of Monday morning.

Officials are linking the closure to what the school board said is one probable case of COVID-19 and two other cases that are under investigation. The health unit said it follows a probable case in the same way it follows a confirmed case of COVID to reduce the potential risk of spread.

Monday afternoon, the school board told CTV News that virtual learning for the 339 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 12 begins Tuesday. Families in need of devices will receive them.

There’s no decision yet on when the school will reopen.
