SUDBURY -- There have been eight new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the Cochrane District since Wednesday after a new infection was announced Friday morning by Porcupine Health Unit.

The district's case number 114 involves a Timmins resident who was exposed to the disease through close contact with another known case and is now in isolation.

Public health will notify all people considered close contacts of this individual.

"Regardless of an announcement of a case, everyone is reminded to stay home if they have symptoms and get tested," the health unit said in a news release.

This after six new cases were confirmed Thursday, five of who are residents of the James and Hudson Bay region.

Of the seven active cases, two are from Timmins.

Thursday evening Porcupine Health Unit said there have been three possible public exposures to COVID-19 related to air travel and two Timmins restaurants.

The travel-related exposure is being considered "high-risk" and anyone who flew on Thunder Air from Timmins to Attawapiskat Nov. 23 on the 8:15 a.m. departure is asked to self-isolate immediately and call the health unit at 1-800-461-1818.

East Side Mario's and Siva's Family Restaurant in Timmins have had "potential low-risk exposures," the health unit said.

Patrons of East Side Mario's at the restaurant around 8 p.m. on Nov. 20 are asked to self monitor until Dec. 4.

Customers at Siva's on Nov. 22 around 6 p.m. are being asked to self-monitor until Dec. 6.

Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should self-isolate and call the health unit.

"An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting 48 hours before having any symptoms or testing positive for the disease," the health unit said.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Fever 
  • New or worsening cough 
  • Shortness of breath 
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste
  • Difficulty swallowing 
  • Runny nose or nasal congestion 
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain 

Atypical Symptoms include:

  • Unexplained fatigue or malaise
  • Muscle aches
  • Unexplained or increased number of falls
  • Acute functional decline
  • Exacerbation of current chronic conditions
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Croup
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Delirium
