SUDBURY -- Timmins Mayor George Pirie is expected to begin gradual return to work after a medical issue.

A statement was issued on the city's website Monday afternoon just before 2 p.m.:

"The City of Timmins would like to take this opportunity to clarify some stories circulating in the public regarding the health of Mayor George Pirie. Several weeks ago, Mayor Pirie suffered a medical issue that required a short stay at the hospital. He was released shortly thereafter and has been recovering at home. There are no long-term effects to his condition and he is expected to make a full recovery."

Pirie will begin a gradual return to work as early as next week.

During his recovery, Deputy Mayor Andrew Marks is filling in and has been representing council and participating on the Municipal Emergency Control Group.
