Chi-Cheemaun's final sail of the season will be Sunday
Manitoulin Island's famous ferry, the TMS Chi-Cheemaun will leave South Baymouth for the final time this season on Sunday.
The boat is scheduled to leave the island at 3:50 p.m. on Monday, she'll leave Tobermory for Owen Sound, where it'll be berthed for winter.
It's been a tough few years for ferry traffic, given the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC) says it's pleased with what it calls the success of 2022.
According to a news release from the company, traffic numbers fared better than expected. As of Oct. 13, the Chi-Cheemaun carried 21 per cent more vehicles and 31 per cent more passengers compared to 2021, for a total of 57,320 vehicles and 154,312 passengers.
In total, there were 28 cancelled trips (ten due to weather and 18 due to mechanical issues). The OSTC says that is a 97 per cent reliability rate.
Officials said this adds there is optimism for the 2023 season, they plan to strengthen community stakeholder engagement and reinstate onboard experiences such as the concert cruise series and interpretative presentations.
