SUDBURY -- Police in Sault Ste. Marie have laid charges -- although not murder charges -- in connection with the city's first homicide of the year, which took place Jan. 9.

Police arrested a 19-year-old male suspect on March 17, with assistance of the Toronto Police Service.

The Toronto resident is charged in connection with a shooting in the 100 block of Caledon Street. In January, police said the victim, 44-year-old John David Jamieson, is believed to have been involved in a robbery with two other men before being shot to death and left in a parking lot on Caledon Street.

The 19-year-old is not facing murder charges and instead is charged with possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted weapon, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and breach of recognizance.

His next court date is pending, Sault police said in a news release Wednesday.
