Ceremony held to honour Sudbury woman who’s turning 105
On Friday afternoon in Sudbury, Laura Belanger celebrated her 105th birthday with friends and local politicians on hand.
Mayor Paul Lefebvre presented her with a certificate and Ward 11 Coun. Bill Leduc handed over the cake.
"She is a very active young lady and gets out and enjoys all the beautiful things in life,” Leduc said.
“You will see her out in the gardens in the summer and she just enjoys living here.”
Belanger was born in 1918 in Biscotasing and later lived in Mattawa where she raised her family. She moved to Sudbury more than 50 years ago.
People who know her said she is an early riser, keeps busy and laughs a lot. They said that's her secret to longevity.
"In the morning she is the first to come up," said Maria Maggiolo, Belanger’s roommate.
“She helps me to make my bed. She is the first there at quarter after 7 for breakfast and never misses a day.”
Belanger has lived at the Chartwell Westmount Retirement Residence for the past 22 years.
