The Timmins Police Service and the Porcupine Health Unit have issued a public safety advisory.

They say illicit drugs seized in a bust earlier this summer have tested positive for containing a highly addictive opioid, carfentanil.

The bust occurred in mid-July, when officers searched several homes and charged 10 people in the raid.

Police say they seized the street drug 'purp', cocaine and methamphetamine tablets along with $15,000 in cash and weapons.

"We made the seizures at three different locations within the city of Timmins… this would give rise to the suspicion that it's being circulated in other avenues that are yet to be determined by the Timmins Police Service… Nonetheless, the threat to public safety remains in place. We don't use the words like toxic or lethal very often unless it's warranted," said Marc Depatie of the Timmins Police Service.

Officials are issuing the warning because they say just one experiment with a drug containing carfentanil could be lethal.
