It's a huge weekend shaping up in the Sudbury area community of Capreol.

The once booming little railroad community is celebrating its past and its present with a 100th anniversary party.

And those returning to Capreol will hardly recognize the new and improved waterfront.

Phase one of three is now complete just in time for Capreol's 100th anniversary.

Kris Longston is the manager of community and strategic planning at City of Greater Sudbury.

"It was really just a berm in the road and it didn't really offer too many opportunities for active transportation, for people to gather to walk along the waterfront. So, these improvements have made that possible. This is a great natural aspect that they thought was being underutilized and now I think we brought it to its full potential." said Longston.

City officials say construction began last fall and within the next year, they would like to start looking into implementing the next two phases.

"The other phases we want to work on our improvements for the downtown and also to see about opportunities for tourism and recreation on the other side of the river." said Longston.

The waterfront project consists of a one-kilometre walking trail, lighting improvements, and a gathering area and has a total price-tag of $1.8-million.

"It's something that I know the community has been working on for a number of years, and you know, we've approved the funding and moved this forward since 2015 during this council term and supported the vision that people in Capreol have had." said Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger.

Mike Jakubo is the Sudbury city councillor for ward 7.

"This weekend is a huge homecoming weekend. There's going to be a lot of people coming back to Capreol for the first time in a long time, and I think it is wonderful if they can drive by this waterfront and see this beautiful project that's completed." said Jakubo.

Celebrations for Capreol's 100th birthday will be taking place throughout the weekend, with activities wrapping up on Sunday.
