Hundreds of people dressed in runners were out at North Bay's hospital on the morning of September 22 for the 13th annual 'Our Walk and Run' fundraiser.

Each year the hospital chooses a different area of health to focus on and raise money.

This year is the Cancer Care Close to Home program.

Runners are donating money to the program and supporting family and friends with the life-changing disease.

"If it hasn't his us yet, at some point in our lives it will," said Brenda Walsh, runner.

Among the hundreds who laced up for the run was Kim Kanmacher, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2017.

She remembers the trials and tribulation she faced, but after a 7 month battle, she is now cancer free.

She says a major part of beating the disease was having local treatment services.

"We are so lucky in our community to be able to have our treatments right here in North Bay. I can't tell you enough how much that meant to me and my family for me not having to travel during the rigorous treatments," said Kanmacher.

Over $103 thousand is being donated to the Cancer Care Close to Home program.

The program aims to purchase advanced medical equipment for the hospital that would detect and treat cancer.

"We have been able to purchase two brand new CT scanners. They use a low-rate radiation and exquisite imaging, and they're able to address the wait-times for non-urgent CT," said Tammy Morison, North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation President.

During the course of this 13 year walk and run, the hospital foundation estimates about $1.3 million has been donated for patient care, medical equipment and treatment services.
