Sudbury -

Cambrian College received $500,000 through the government’s Global Skills Opportunities Program to help send up to 85 students overseas to study.

The school will begin accepting applications in January for its Study Abroad initiative.

Officials with the college said the experience ranges from one week to four months and will help students gain valuable life experience.

"When someone travels they come back with a different thought or a different perspective," said Imad Al-Sukkari, Cambrian College International director.

"So we want to make sure students have access to this to broader their career skills, their global competency, but also to have an experience as a human being.”

Kate Keaney, of Cambrian College student council, said being a student is more than just going to class.

“There’s extracurricular and other things that you could be doing to get a whole realm of student experiences and I think this would definitely provide that," Keaney said.

"Being able to experience a new culture, experiencing a new environment, getting to know new people.”

Officials said any student can apply, but there is a focus on "Indigenous, low-income or students with disabilities."
