SUDBURY -- Public Health officials in Sault Ste. Marie have notified police about possible fraudulent activity relating to callers representing themselves as health inspectors from Algoma Public Health (APH).

Sault Police say two local restaurants have reported receiving telephone calls from individuals claiming to be Public Health Inspectors from the city's health unit, offering inspections for a fee.

"Businesses regularly inspected by APH Public Health Inspectors include restaurants, salons/spas, tattoo studios, body piercing establishments & other businesses that offer personal services," read the statement.

Restaurants are reminded that Public Health Inspections are free and to call police should they be contacted by someone attempting to schedule an inspection and requesting credit card information.

Businesses are asked to check if an inspector is employed by APH by calling (705) 759-5286, should they suspect fraudulent activity.
