SUDBURY -- Boxing Day used to be the biggest shopping day of the year for many Canadians, but now it seems Black Friday is a more popular time for shoppers to hit the stores.

Still, people came out in droves across the north on Thursday to see what deals they could snag.

People in Sudbury say they got the Boxing Day deals they were looking for.

"We exchanged an Xbox for an Xbox One S and we got a $100 gift card for my brother and then we got two games," said one shopper.

Shoppers were also out in North Bay looking for deals as the Northgate Mall was busy, however, not everyone was shopping.

Others chose to spend their day elsewhere, like Cassie Spagnolo who donated blood here in Sudbury for the 15th time.

"I had missed an appointment and so I saw some of the media was talking about how they only had eight donors on Boxing Day, and so I thought my in-laws are around to watch my kids, so I got some time to just drop in," said Spagnolo.

She says while it was a special feeling to donate on Boxing Day, she encourages everyone to think about giving back to the community in some way all year round.

"It feels pretty good. I try to volunteer throughout the year, and like I said, I try to give blood throughout the year but during Christmas does make it a little extra special. I think over the winter, especially blood I think is needed more maybe… so coming in on the holidays make it a little extra cheery," she expressed.

Going into Thursday's donor clinic, staff members at Canadian Blood Services say they had 29 booked appointments.
