Boil water advisory issued for parts of Elliot Lake
In consultation with the Algoma Public Health, the City of Elliot Lake has issued a boil water advisory for parts of the city for any activity where water may be ingested.
“Whenever any kind of repair or construction on the water supply system either planned or an emergency, there is a risk of soil or other contaminants entering the water supply,” reads a news release by the city.
“Although this risk is very low, a boil water advisory is issued to all residents, businesses and public facilities located along this area of the water supply system.”
The advisory has been issued for Lakeview, Willow Lane, Pine Rd, Poplar, Spruce, Westview, Central, Maple, Oak Hill, Birch, Tamarack, Valley Cres, Cedar, Balsam, Hemlock, Beech, Hillside Drive North and North Industrial Park and Simpson Park.
The public health authority advised those affected not to use unboiled water to:
- Drink
- Brush teeth
- Wash fruits and vegetables
Residents in the impacted area should bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before it can be used for many activities.
Use boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, handwashing, washing dishes, washing fruits and vegetables, preparing food and baby formula, making ice, coffee makers, sponge bath babies and young children (after water cools) and giving water to pets.
This advisory will remain in effect until work on the system is complete and microbiological samples confirm the safety of the water.
“This work will not affect your water service, but we advise that you open each cold tap, one at a time, and let them run for about 20 seconds each,” said city officials.
“This should release any air trapped in your water lines.”
The city advised that if the water is cloudy or contains grit to continue to run the cold water taps until the water runs clear.
