Update 2:

SUDBURY -- Officials with the Ontario Special Investigation Unit (SIU) say the body of the 20-year-old man who went missing in Lake Nipissing following a crash in North Bay Tuesday evening has been located.

SUI says the body of the suspect that fled the crash was recovered Wednesday afternoon by the Ontario Provincial Police dive team.

The date for a post-mortem examination is to be determined.

Update: 

SUDBURY -- More information has been released on the crash overnight in North Bay that had the Ontairo Provincial Police Marine Unit searching the waters of Lake Nipissing.

The Special Investigation Unit says police were sent to the area of Main Street West and Memorial Drive after receiving a report of a vehicle being driven erractically. 

Officials say the vehicle crashed before officers located it and that both occupants fled on foot. 

The 20-year-old male that was allegedly driving headed towards Lake Nipissing and entered the water as emergency responders arrived.

Police say despite repeated requests for the man to exit the water, he swam further away from the shore before emergency personnel lost sight of him.

Efforts to locate the man are continuing with the assistance from the OPP Marine Unit.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.

SUDBURY -- North Bay police say the province's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in relation to a single-vehicle crash Tuesday night.

Police say shortly before 6 p.m. officers responded to a crash in the area of Jett and 10th Avenue.

Early reports say the vehicle jumped the railway tracks and hit a tree.

Police say that two people allegedly fled the scene, with one running into nearby Lake Nipissing.

Local emergency first responders as well as the Ontario Provincial Police Marine Unit assisted in the water search, but the individual has not been located yet.

The investigation continues.
