Update:

Human remains were discovered in Elliot Lake on Wednesday and police are still at the scene, saying they will be there for a while.

Police confirm officers located a body in a wooded, swampy area behind a public works pump house off Canmet Road. They will not say why they were searching the area, but investigators will remain on scene until sometime next week.

“We have the East Algonquin crime unit that is involved, they are gathering information. The forensic identification unit, they are gathering evidence. We have scene security, we have two officers at all times, 24-7.” said Ontario Provincial Police Constable Bev Gauthier.

Yellow police tape blocks off the area to keep it from being contaminated.

Ray Bishop, an Elliot Lake resident, says news of a body being discovered in a frozen, swampy area is unsettling and strange.

“We don't know how long the body has been there. Since January, we have had several good bouts of freezing weather and then we had mild weather along with snow.” said Constable Gauthier.

A post-mortem is scheduled for early next week at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Sault Ste. Marie.

Police say they will release more information about this case when they have results from the examination.Update:

Investigators are at the scene with forensic identification officers.

Police are saying little, except that they are awaiting the arrival of a coroner.

Police say winter conditions are making the investigation challenging, as they're dealing with snow and ice and have to bring in equipment to thaw the area.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario has been called in to assist in the investigation.
