SUDBURY -- A day-long standoff on Beatty Street in Greater Sudbury came to an end early Thursday evening when a suspect was arrested.

Police had been on the scene since the morning, after receiving a tip that a man wanted for a serious offences was inside a building on Beatty.

"The 38-year-old man was wanted in connection to a break and enter, serious assault and a robbery with a firearm that took place on July 26 at a residence on Frood Road," police said in a news release. "The victim, a 36-year-old man, sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident."

Police arrived and closed off the perimeter around the building, when they saw the man exit the building, then turn around and go back inside.

"Patrol officers arrived on scene and took over the perimeter, restricting vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Beatty Street while tactical and K9 officers set up containment of the residential building," police said. "Tactical officers made multiple attempts to speak with the man, however he was not cooperative."

Police cleared all units inside the building except for the one where the man was believed to be hiding. Police got a warrant to enter the unit, and moved in at 4:30 p.m., arresting the man without further incident.

He is now charged with robbery with a firearm, using a firearm while committing a crime, aggravated assault, break and enter and two counts of uttering death threats.

He will be held in police custody and will be in bail court Friday.

The public is being asked to avoid Beatty Street in the Donovan area of Greater Sudbury as police search for a wanted man.

In a tweet Thursday, Greater Sudbury Police warned of heavy police presence in the area as officers conduct their search.

The man is wanted for a serious assault and robbery with a firearm.

"Man believed to be in unit of residential building," the tweet said. "Officers have building contained. Community members asked to avoid area. No risk to general public."
